چکیده
Commercial sugarbeet yields range between 50 and 100 t clean beets/ha, with sugar concentrations of 17 to 18% on fresh weight (8 to 18 t sugar/ha; Milford, 2006). For 2010, beet yields in the U.S. averaged 62.2 t/ha. However, in the Imperial Valley (predominant cattle feeding region for the state of California), clean beet yields averaged 98.8 t/ha (USDA, 2010); 9 Imperial Valley beet growers topped the 2004 world record (148 t clean beets/ha), setting the new record at 156 t clean beets/ha (Lilleboe, 2010). With an average DM content of 23% (Milford, 2006), clean beet DM yields in the Imperial Valley averaged 22.7 t/ha, 277% the 2010 average DM yield for corn grain (8.2 t corn gain DM/ha; USDA, 2011b). For the year 2010, beet growers were paid an average of $52.80/t ($48.00/ short ton; USDA, 2011a). Assuming an additional cost of $10.00/t for shredding and sun-drying the beets, the cost of shredded, dried beets would be $239.59/dry ton. 1Current address: Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia, Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas, Cd. Comparing Cost versus Benefits of Corn Processing for Feedlot Cattle
Corn processing techniques differ in their effects on feedlot performance and carcass characteristics of finishing cattle. Capacity of a feedlot (critical mass) can dictate which processing method is most feasible economically due primarily to fixed costs for equipment. The local and regional corn pricing basis and availability of other ration ingredients also can influence which corn processin...

The Alpharma Beef Cattle Nutrition symposium was held at the joint annual meeting of the American Society of Animal Science, the American Dairy Science Association, and the Canadian Society of Animal Science in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, July 12 to 16, 2009. The symposium was organized to discuss the increased incorporation, challenges, and management options when alternative energy sources are ...
متن کاملApproaches to the Level and Quality of Forage in Feedlot Diets for Lambs
Diets with low forage concentration may depress feed intake and average daily gain, while diets with high forage concentration may limit feed intake due to rumen filling. Adequate forage level may range from 7% to 14% in ration for feedlot lambs, depending on forage source and ingredient composition. Small amounts of good quality forage may improve growth performance of sheep in the first stage...
متن کاملRecent Research on Liquid Supplements for Beef Cattle
A recent survey (Williams, 1995) indicated that over 1.7 million tons of liquid feed were manufactured in the 1994-95 production year. An estimated 45% (708,000 tons) of this liquid feed was used in feedlot diets and 55% (960,000 tons) was specified as non-feedlot and presumably most of this was fed to cattle on forage based diets. Past estimates of liquid feed tonnage indicate it has grown an ...
